Actually, THIS is my final rounds: New art up at Java Jungle!

February 27, 2009

Today I put my possessions in storage and either late tonight or early tommorrow morning catch a Greyhound for my first leg of the trip to the Mendocino County coast.  Having succeeded in packing all my stuff, I was able to visit the office one more time:

And, at the “office” this morning, I learned there was a big art show here last night and new art was put up on the walls:

Last Third Eye rounds in Reno for two months….

February 23, 2009
open mic, Java Jungle, Feb. 23rd

open mic, Java Jungle, Feb. 23rd

I have to catch up on preparations for my two month plus absence from Reno, so tonight I made one final pit stop at the site where I usually go online.  I now have a temporary mailbox address (for at least three months) and my phone is set to be disconnected on Monday (when I actually leave for the coast).  Posting will resume early next week and I have decided to share happenings from that area.  Reno is closely tied to the northern California area so dispatches from there might be of interest to people who check in here once in awhile.

I’ll be sad to miss the upcoming “New Media” summit.  (I think it has another name now, with “Interactive” in the title.)  I just saw the line up of speakers yesterday and this event (at UNR in their Reynolds School of Journalism) will be a great introduction to all these new tools we now have available.  Check out the details at http://www.nevadanewmedia.org

Speaking of interactive, new media resources, David Bobzien and Tracy Viselli have created new groups that may be of interest:

David’s:

Tracy’s:

Adios for now!!  Back online early next week.

UPDATE: spent Tuesday packing and cleaning place.  Basicly caught up (with stuff now ready to store!)  Will likely have to leave Saturday morning now, due to days of heavy snow storms being predicted.

Gay/Straight Alliance Students Protest Alleged Abuse

February 22, 2009

As a report on Channel 2 noted last night, the authorities are currently investigating a report by two male students (one straight, one gay) where they allege being victimized in a hate crime.  Yesterday, a group of Spanish Springs High School students gathered near the corner of Arlington and 1st to raise awareness on hate crimes (all this as a huge number of people were coursing through downtown streets as part of a wine walk):

Updated information provided by Billy Howard (host of http://washoegreen.com) in the comment section:

I was in SNCAT classes until 6 and it wasn’t until later I got a message from Matt E, one of my favorite ppl in Reno, SMSing this gathering. I surely would have gone if I could.

Matt says the homosexual was “badly hurt with a concussion and several other severe injuries and now waits jaw surgery. The ally was also hurt very badly with several broken bones and a few missing teeth.

I’m not sure their age but they were set upon in this hate crime by two high school seniors. All attend Spanish Springs.

Flickr, valuable tool for bloggers

February 21, 2009

I have recently been adding pages of photos at my “eurekamoksha” account, using an older generation Olympus camera (that requires “smart media” compact flash cards that are no longer manufactured, but nevertheless pics can be erased from these cards after downloaded).

When I first opened up this account, I only had a cheap camera from Walgreens (and, the photos posted from that camera reflect that fact).  Here’s the link to my Flickr account:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/28424275@N06/

As my friend Kevin from Napa noted, I have a lot to learn (he mentioned something about composition), so I have been photographing under various conditions (i.e. like various times of day with different lighting conditions).  The camera I am using  now has 10x zoom power and that’s something I really, really like using (as many pics demonstrate).

There are some other prolific posters (from Reno) of photos at Flickr  and many of them are very good at taking great photos.   I will be adding links to specific Flickr accounts that really do a good job of revealing the many faces of Reno and Renoites.  (For now, note the link to the Flickr group Reno and Its Discontents in the Photo Gallery category on the right side of the page.)

BTW, when I’m in the Point Arena, California area during March and April, I will be likely posting photos like crazy from there!  Point Arena is about 15-20 miles north of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line (Sea Ranch is just south of that and Gualala is just north of it).  I already have a Mendocino County photo set at my Flickr account (all photos so far from that cheap Walgreens camera that I USED to have).

Anyone is welcome to use or repost any photos from there.  I don’t care.  My name, btw, is not “atiasrama” or “eurekamoksha”, but Mike Jamieson.  So, that’s the name you can use when identifying the photographer.  Hopefully, I will learn a thing or two by my heavy experimentation in photography.  But, for now, I at least now have a tool to use in “fleshing out” blog articles.  A picture is worth a thousand words sometimes.

Armed standoff in Reno!

February 18, 2009

An armed parole violator from Texas is (as this is being posted, a couple blocks away from the scene)  in the room at the motorlodge above the office, curtains drawn.  The police were firing tear gas when I was there.  Bystanders huddled behind train trench wall along Commercial Street, as the police kept this section of West Street blocked off.

When gone from Reno in March/April, will upgrade links here….

February 17, 2009

The first thing I am working on is expanding the blogroll.  Ron Anderson’s “Local So and So” blog has just been added and I would love to find as many Reno based (and even some general Nevada ones) to add in that link category.  Right now, what might be helpful is that a Reno Bloggers group has been added at Reno Baby!, our largest social network ning group: http://renonv.ning.com

I want to also especially add on to the Art and Music Scene (in Reno) link category as well as the Photo Gallery category.  If any readers want me to add anything to those categories, email me at atiasrama@gmail.com

Currently, I am preparing my departure to northern California for a couple of months of caretaking (near Point Arena, California) and should be back in late April.   If I’m not able to expand upon the clairvoyent reach of my “third eye”, postings about Reno here will obviously slow down during this time period.  I’ll probably try to post notes, though, at http://twitter.com/atiasrama or at Facebook.

On another front, I continue to get intriguing leads to follow up on when I see the keywords people use in their searches (which leads them to this blog).  Along those lines, anyone know anything about a creature on Peavine Mountain?!?!?!  I would love to add cryptozoology to my Reno X-Files link category, if there is in fact any stories related to creatures in our nearby mountains.

Finally, I would like to direct regular readers here to an increasingly valuable information and networking site: http://washoegreen.com or http://washoegreens.ning.com  You do NOT have to be a member of the Green Party to join that group and participate.  (Also, note the Reno Baby! address already provided.)

UPDATE: Speaking of Facebook, I fortunately remembered a note Zeke (“ZekeSaysSo”) posted there, reporting his blog’s new address: http://zekesaysso.com  He’s no  longer with blogger and I have updated his link in the blogroll.

Work on the other blog nearing completion…..

February 17, 2009

A Forest Wanderer’s Notes is nearly completed as I finish taking a “tour” of primary spiritual influences in my life.  When that’s finally completed, I will write an original upanishad that will be called The Peavine Upanishad.  My intent is to provide valuable and basic tools that will serve others.

Third Eye on Reno will remain an active blog (so long as I am living in Reno, Nevada).

Oliver X presents: great music at West Street Market today

February 16, 2009

As a relatively new explorer of the art and music scene in Reno, I became a bit more familiar with some great musicians today at the West Street Market (inside the Se7en site there).  Initially this was going to be an outdoor event, but incredibly cold weather (including intermittent snowing) foiled those plans.  (Including plans by the Downtown Marketplace to have their “grand opening” today, according to the woman who I presume is an owner of that business.)  But, devotees of the art of hula hooping braved the outdoor courtyard for awhile:

But, then moved back inside:

The music began around 2pm, with Oliver X introducing folk singers, a group called Sage Heart:

Then, we heard some rock from Last Stand:

Then up next was Tyler Stafford, initially by himself but joined near the end of the set by bass player Johnny Walker (see http://www.myspace.com/tylerstaffordmusic/):

And, finally, I stayed to listen to Anne Marie , whose wonderful voice (with great range) was matched with graceful movements.  (See http://www.myspace.com/annemariefanclub and http://web.mac.com/annemariefanclub

Her father is Chip Evans, CEO of the newly created Songwriting and Performance Institute (see http://www.spimusic.com), seen here helping her set up (according to Oliver X, Chip at the last minute provided key equipment for the performances today):

Note on Oliver X: he recently started publishing a new mini magazine called Reno Tahoe Tonight (briefly described at this blog in an earlier article).  His website, describing his efforts in “street artist development” and “tour management” is http://gigsrus.net
